Message_For: Rock Medicine Staff
From: Barbara
THANK YOU FOR CARING
Hello,
My name is Barbara and I would like to thank your staff for coming to my
rescue this weekend in Mountain View at Santana's Concert. My best friend
of 45 years has type 1 diabetes, plus she broke her foot in 3 places
a few months ago and because of the diabetes it is taking longer to heal.
Since, we went to high school with Carlos Santana, we never miss a
concert. After arriving at the concert we changed clothes in the car. I
live in Merced and she is resides in Sacramento. While changing her
clothes she had to take her diabetes pump off. She was able to get a ride
with someone from your staff who was attending to someone else. I
mentioned to him that her foot was broken and if she could get a ride. Of
course, they said yes. During, the Concert, Patrice mentioned that she
forgot to put her pump back on and that it was in the car. She had just
eaten and we figured her sugar was off the scale. Her diabetes is so
critical that she can't tell if it is up or down. While walking to the car
I noticed a sign that said MEDICAL. I stopped and talked to Nancy Ballon
and she notified Emily of our problem. Emily immediately took charge and
asked Kyle Cornelius to take us to the car along with Mike in case she
became ill. They took us to the car where she attached her pump and they
brought us back to Amphitheater. Inside the theater, Mike checked her
blood sugar and it was normal. We were able to enjoy the rest of the
concert. I can't thank your team enough for their patience, understanding
and caring during this time. I can' thank them enough for taking care of
my best friend. Her diabetes is so bad that she has a splint in her heart.
This was caused because of several episodes of ketoacidosis. Sometimes she
throws up blood and has to be rushed to emergency. Because of your staff,
they saved my friend and we were able to enjoy the day. We live for today
because tomorrow isn't promised to any of us. Your staff made it possible
for us to have fun on this day. I can't thank them enough. You guys are so
special and you are so appreciated for caring for others. You will always
been in my heart and prayers. God Bless You All!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, they
pushed her in the wheel chair back to the car after the Concert. I didn't
get those 2 guys name but they were great. We laughed all the way to the
car. I can't say enough about the people. There is a God and he was at
Santan's Concert that night. Thank You and I will send you a donation.

We are getting ready to produce the Rock Medicine
Laminates for 2003. If you have had your photo taken by Bob, you are all set.
The quickest way to get a lam will be to mail a photo with your face, ¾” wide
and 1” tall, I can cut it out to fit the lam, and mail it to the office with a
self addressed stamped envelope and I will get it back to you. You may also wait
until your next show to get your photo taken.
See ‘ya at the shows!

Paramedics that would be very interested too!!

Hello, I give all at Rock Med much praise for their
work. I am a newly graduating nurse in Illinois. I want to know if
there is Rock Med in the Chicago area? How about any plans to expand
here? I would love to volunteer to help people and use my skills,
thanks and once again, nice work!

I'm an EMT in Kentucky at the
Nicholas Co. EMS service and I think you guys have the greatest job.
I could only imagine doing something so cool. I don't know if there
are any opportunities in this area for this type of work, but I'd
love to do it here. Keep up the great work and rock on.

"Rock Med" the Video VH1
(UPDATED 4/25/03)
The concert is in full swing and the medical tent is filling up. Feedback
rattles the walls, guitar chords fall like hammer blows, and the floor is
swirling with sweaty kids rocking out to the music. Hardly an ideal place to
practice medicine.
But in a room backstage, Dr. Tris Rieland dutifully snaps on a pair of rubber
gloves and starts to sort through the casualties, triage style. First in: a
shirtless, 21-year-old guy with a mangled wrist, it's probably broken. Next to
him is a kid with a bloody gash above his left eye; he's going to need stitches.
"Battle scar, dude," observes a third bloodied youth.
On the concert floor medic Mike Hazlett and nurse practitioner
Physician Assistant Sylvia Davies
wind their way through the crowd armed with walkie-talkies and a first aid kit.
They eye the crowd looking for trouble---for glassy eyed exhaustion cases or
over zealous stage divers. On any given night they'll treat between 10 and 30
patients over the course of a two-and-a-half-hour concert. "Sometimes I want to
sit down and enjoy the music," says Hazlett, "But I know the minute we relax,
someone's going to pass out in front of us."
Rieland, Hazlett and Davies are a volunteers in a San Francisco-based program
called "Rock Medicine," a one-of-a-kind, non-profit group that tends to the
wounded at every major concert in the Bay Area. Hundreds of volunteer
physicians, nurses, EMTs, and other medical professionals dedicate long hours
and late nights to the program, traveling from a Metallica show in San Jose one
night to an 'N SYNC concert in Sacramento the next. When someone at a concert is
sick or injured Rock Medicine's volunteers are on hand to provide a safety net.
The volunteers come from all backgrounds and all medical specialties, united
only by their commitment to help people and their passion for music.
This commitment and passion will drive a new 8 part prime-time television series
called Rock Med. Each week we'll join the volunteers of Rock Medicine as they
are deployed to dozens of concerts throughout the area, covering all types of
music and all types of cases. While the medical teams will provide the series
with recurring characters, they won't be the sole focus of the program. In each
half-hour, we'll also get to know the patients - music loving people of all
types who end up in the medical tent thanks to some combination of carelessness,
enthusiasm, and bad luck. Some of their stories will be light-hearted and
humorous, others will be moving, perhaps even tragic. By following each story
from the injury in the mosh-pit to the reunion with their friends back in the
crowd, the show will bring out real human stories that play out beneath the
glamorous world of rock music. Built around the real-life tales of music loving
people, Rock Med will give audiences an exciting new vision of what music
television can be.
http://www.vh1.com/shows/dyn/rock_med/series_about.jhtml
* "Rock Med": Heart attacks, broken legs and severe sunburns -- rock concerts can be hell on a fan. Most
incidents are minor, but if you're unfortunate enough to have one, hope that
you're in San Francisco where the mobile emergency medical team of
doctors has been volunteering at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic for years.
This VH1 series looks at what happens when a night of great music
goes awry, and follows the "Rock Meds" who selflessly volunteer free
services at major concerts in the Bay Area, and beyond

I just wanted to thank the people working at Rock Medicine on Dec 14 at the BG
Civic Center. I was treated with care and compassion. I evidently was coming
down with the flu ( currently have 101 temp, V & D, ) at the time however had no
idea what was going on. With the exception of Jason, I unfortunately do not
remember everybody's name that was there, but again they were all wonderful.
Thanks You.

"Health Care is a Right, Not a Privilege."
This statement is what drives the members of Rock
Medicine. A non-judgmental, unbiased approach to patients and a deep
knowledge of medicine is what makes this organization so special. It takes
a certain kind of person to volunteer with Rock Med. It takes a person who
is willing to deal with vomit and belligerent patients, yet keeping a
sense of humor and a smile the entire time (and come back again and again
for more!).
The philosophy of Rock Med and its participants is simple:
"Take care of the individual right now and return him to his friends or
his family and do away with the necessity of either hospitalizing him or
getting him involved with the law."
George R. "Skip" Gay, M.D., CO-Founder, Former Director
