Q1: How do you become a Rock Medicine Volunteer?
Answer: All our volunteers have to attend a orientation. We hold our orientations in the
Spring usually scheduled before the opening of our large outdoor
venues. The minimum requirement is CPR certification. We accept
doctors, physicians assistants, and nurse practitioners, all year round.

Q3: Why isn't Rock Medicine type coverage everywhere?
And how would we get it started?
Answer: Medical coverage is at the discretion of the local promoter or venue management.
Rock Medicine has the backing and support of our local promoter, Bill Graham Presents, and our
parent organization, the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics. We have also
established ourselves over the period of twenty three years (since 1973). While most
venues have some type of medical coverage, the level of intervention
is decided by the promoter and or venue management. |
Q4: What else do I need to know before becoming
a Rock Medicine Volunteer?
The next Rock Medicine Orientation will be held in April 2004. Rock Medicine won't be accepting new volunteers until then. Physicians, PAs, & NPs are welcome any time and can call the office (415-487-3681) for an application.
For other jobs or volunteering at the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, call Human Resources at 415-561-5251, call the HAFCI job announcement line at 415-561-5297, or visit

Summer & Fall is the busiest time for Raz (the director) and he has no office help. With 400 active volunteers and over 200 shows each year, you'll be helping him by reading the basic information on the web site and then e-mailing me back if you have additional questions. Remember, Raz doesn't have e-mail (Rock Medicine needs a better computer), so anything you send to Raz via e-mail gets filtered through me and other volunteers.
Information about how and when to join Rock Medicine is on this web site (www.RockMed.org/ShowList.htm). The office address is:
Rock Medicine
Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc.
Attn: RAZ
612 Clayton Street
San Francisco CA 94117
Check out the web site:
http://www.RockMed.org/ShowList.htm
(the list of shows we'll be working in the next month or so)
http://www.RockMed.org/ShowListOldNews.htm
(news of interest to volunteers and others, and some of the better bad jokes people send)
Then call the tape 415-487-3681 after 5 p.m. weekdays and 24 hours on weekends to get the latest Show List.
"Raz don't do e-mail!" So please check out the web site (did I mention that?) - answers to most questions are there -- and then call the tape. You'll need to call during business hours to book a show; always leave a daytime phone number.
About the "Unofficial Rock Medicine Newsletter"
I had been sending the Rock Medicine newsletter each month with the upcoming show list and other items of interest to volunteers. As some subscribers noted, it became longer and longer between each e-mail.
I started the list in 1995 with six e-mail addresses and ended in June 2001 with over 600. Adding, changing, and removing 30-50 addresses from the list each month began to take too much time and I had other projects (building a
www.CraigsList.org type list wasn't one of them). Back in 1995 not everyone could surf the Internet. Now, with tons of junk e-mail and the ease of browsing the Internet, I've decided I can update the newsletter more often by posting it at the
RockMed.org web site.
For the latest Show List and updated Rock Medicine information go to http://www.RockMed.org/ShowList.htm
You'll also find new web pages for "Old News" and "Bad Jokes".
Hope this works for you. Remember, the Show List is a guideline -- the latest information can be obtained at 415-487-3681 (except during business
hours 8AM-5PM M-F).
See you at the shows - thanks for your interest in volunteering with Rock Medicine and the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics.
Bye Bob
