California EMT Recertification

To renew your California State EMT certification you can complete either an EMT Refresher course or 24 hours of CE. You must also complete an EMT skills verification test. While Rock Medicine does offer EMT skills verification and CE courses, we do not offer an EMT Refresher programs. There are many other options for completing your 24 hours of CE, including online refreshers, online CE courses, and accredited college or university classes in physical or behavioral sciences.

Please be aware that California requires at least 12 of your 24 CE hours to be instructor lead (not self-paced or distributive) and will only accept a maximum of 12 CE hours in any one 24 hour period. College courses completed for CE must be passed with a C average or better. For more information about Ce requirements, please contact your certifying agency/county.

More information on California State Approved Continuing Education courses is available here.

National Registry EMT Recertification

While in California the National Registry EMT certification is only required for initial state EMT certification, many EMTs wish to remain nationally registered for a variety of reasons, including the possibility of becoming an EMT in a state outside of California. You do not need to renew your national registry to work as an EMT in California so long as you maintain your valid California State EMT certification.

To renew your National Registry EMT certification, you must:

  • Complete 72 hours of Continuing Education (CE's) - 24 in specific areas
  • Affiliate with an EMS Agency registered with the National Registry
  • Complete a skills verification with the agency you're affiliated with

While the National Registry accepts most state CE's, the NREMT has less strict requirements than California when it comes to online and college courses. More information on National Registry Renewal Guidelines is available here.

Active Rock Medicine volunteers who meet certain criteria are also eligible for NREMT Affiliation - more information on requirements and the affiliation process is available in the staff portal. For the purposes of NREMT affiliation and recertification, Rock Medicine only accepts skills verifications conducted by Rock Medicine or an approved EMS training officer conducted in-person. Verification from other agencies or instructors is not accepted.
